Indonesia has some impressive numbers, it is the fourth largest population for a country and has over 17,000 islands and 55,000 km of coastline. Indonesia is the largest archipelago with a total distance of 5,000 km. Bali is the centre of tourism and the diving industry and has some great dive sites around the island and is also the launch pad for many live aboard that head east.
Bali has one of the best wreck dives in Asia with a ship called the U.S Liberty which was torpedoed during WW2. It was originally beached but due to a volcano it was pushed into the water. The wreck is not deep and you can actually snorkel the top of the wreck.
There are many other dive sites dotted around Bali's coast line like Amuk Bay near Candidasa north to Amed and then over to Menjangan, a marine park in the very northwest of Bali with a view of Java. In the Lombok starits, the islands of Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida offer greta drift diving and will give you a greta chance to see the Manta Ray or the Mola Mola also known as the sun fish, which will appear at certain times of the year.
There are plenty more diving beyond Bali such as Manado Bay which is located in a marine park and has five main islands which makes a good location to explore its deep dives. The coast of Kalimantan which is the Indonesian part of the Borneo is famous for its Manta Rays and as several dive operators in the area.
The islands of Komodo and Flores in Komodo national park are visited by live aboards and this is where the famous Komodo dragons are and has some great diving locations too. Some of the best diving is found around Raja Empat and the seas at the very east of Indonesia, the Indonesian portion of New Guinea is very little explored and the diving industry is just starting out in that region.
